Use a comb. Seriously, I am in Cosmetology school right now, and I have learned that using a comb, or a nylon bristle brush, on dry hair ONLY (combing or brushing hair when wet damages it and breaks it right off) is best. Start from the ends and comb with and upward motion. From ends to roots, to get the tangles, then back down.

Get a brush with a square head. It doesn't pull out your hair as much as round heads and barrel brushes.
