Why does it take an african americans hair so long to grow?

this is not a joke.....i really want to know

Why does it take an african americans hair so long to grow?

True African American hair is for the most part very, very fragile hair, and grows out of the scalp at a slant. The more slant, the curlier the hair is as opposed to typical Caucasian hair, that is straight, grows straight out from the scalp, most common and not always at an angle. Also, African American hair generally has only two layers that compose the actual hair shaft. This applies to some blonde hair too. Which makes it even more delicate/fragile, which causes it to break off very easily. Most other hair contains 3 layers that compose the hair shaft.(Cuticle, Medulla,Matrix) This makes for stronger hair and is less likely to break-off.

So, in a nutshell, African American hair takes longer to gain length because it is fragile hair.

This explanation is the basic concept for human hair, and various exception(s) are possible due to hereditary features.

It does not take too long but it curls up that's why you think it's taking long SIMPLE :)

Why does it take an african americans hair so long to grow?

its not really that it takes long to grow its just that it is very dry and subject to breakage, told to me by my friend who is black.

Why does it take an african americans hair so long to grow?

It doesn't out hair grows the same length as everyone elses. It just depends on what you do with it. If you don't take proper care then it will break off and you won't see the growth.

I'm african american myself and I'm going to say because the ones who hair won't grow are the ones using perm and all the other harsh chemicals that go along with it..My hair and my 6 year old daughters hair is long...No kidding you.

I once was a beautician, and in the training we were told that ALL hair grows at the same speed on ALL peoples. Maybe because it curls it "seems" to you like it grows slower.

Why does it take an african americans hair so long to grow?

Well, it depends on your genes(meaning your parents and the traits they give you). I am an African American and my hair grows fast! So, its not all African Americans!

Well, I'm black and my hair is long. I actually hate it when people ask me if I'm mixed, because I guess they don't usually see black girls with long hair. It's just genetics. My mom had long hair, it was her choice to cut it. My older sister cut her hair, it's a fair length, right now, me and my younger sister have long hair, mine is longer. a lot of people just have different hair texture. I know we black woman have to do a lot to our hair to be satisfied, it's from our ancestors. I think, if you see a hair dresser who really cares about your hair, then things could go good. My hair dresser has been perming my hair for 5 years now, once every 4 to 6 months. I grease my scout, use oil, and a flat iron on my hair. I don't wash it too much. That will break it off. I don't perm it a lot either. It's funny, because sometimes I don't do anything, and it's fine. Too much chemicals can break your hair off, and that's on anyone. Leaving it dirty can help it grow, you know like plants, lol. I don't know if that's why my hair grows, but people are stunned, but there are black girls with long hair, even longer than mine.

Mostly because they have curly hair and it just curls up so the length is not so obvious....

this also applies to chemo patients as well.

I'm biracial and my hair recently just started growing back to its long length because I finally stopped highlighting it every 3 months, perming it, and flat-ironing it (In other words, killing it!) It's all in how you take care of your hair.

It makes me mad why couldnt god make us all the same way this way we wont get any ideas of wanting our hair 2 be diffrent! Iam black and think its because of the lack of moisture and silk of the natrual hair. Also when you comb or brush ur hair the root is being pulled on verry hard causing the hair to be pulled out. god help the black pleaz !

All hair is different and that goes for African American hair too.

Actually, it doesnt take long, but it should be trimmed regularly to stimulate the growth. Certain styles make the hair grow quicker such as dreads. Chemicals and heat treatments slow down the growth.
